When Joseph Hubertus Pilates, a health and wellness genius light-years ahead of his time, developed his method of whole-body (mind, body and spirit) movement in the early 20th century, he was already witnessing the detrimental impact of modern, sedentary lifestyles and the resulting litany of chronic, debilitating conditions. In our contemporary world, this is even more apparent in the alarming increase in osteoporosis, pelvic floor disorders, back surgeries and myriad other joint-replacement surgeries — that we place tremendous demands on misaligned bodies in the form of strenuous exercise and simple daily activities only adds to the problems. Biomechanist Katy Bowman and Pilates teacher-trainer Rebecca Leone's work picks up where Joseph Pilates left off, and a Safe Spine, Strong Back and its accompanying "alignment matters!" mantra is at the heart of every Pilates session at Emerge, whether it's a private session or group class. Joseph Pilates believed that a strong, supple spine is the essence of life, and that belief is the foundation to all our sessions — building strength progressively from within.

Primer packages are an introduction to alignment, natural movement and Pilates for every body and required of all new clients, regardless of previous Pilates experience. You'll learn foundational Nutritious Movement alignment principles and the science behind Rebecca Leone's safe spine/strong back Pilates work, as well as a brief history of Pilates (you may be surprised to learn that there was a real person named Joseph H. Pilates, or that he called his work Contrology, not Pilates). An introduction to the equipment, exercises and personal alignment and movement/strength assessments are included in these three sessions of the Primer Private Package.

Private sessions are for those who wish to deepen their body awareness, Pilates knowledge, core strength and stability, mobility and flexibility. Private sessions are also recommended for clients with specific health, pain and/or alignment concerns, and may be required for clients who are not ready for group classes. These sessions are designed specifically for each individual and incorporate Pilates Mat, Reformer, Chair and Tower work, and other modalities of restorative movement and corrective exercises.

Semi-private sessions are an economical alternative to privates yet still allow for individual attention. Work with a partner (your choice—friend, family member, co-worker, neighbor—or I can help pair you with another client) with similar fitness level, goals and schedules. Like Private sessions, semi-privates incorporate Mat, Reformer, Chair and Tower work, as well as other modalities of movement.

Small Group Classes

Yes, you read that right. Emerge offers several donation-based small group classe: just show up, no registration require, and pay what you can comfortably afford. For reference, most group classes in the Twin Cities average around $15/class; donation-based classes typically ask for a minimum of $5, which helps cover the cost of the instructors time, expenses, etc. Please pay by cash or check when you come to class.

Experience a variety of natural movement-based classes including The Three R's (Release, Relax, Restore), BodyWise Align, BodyWise Pilates, and others. Classes incorporate stretching/mobility work, restorative/natural movement and other natural movement (we may even take class outdoors, weather permitting!), in a personal, small group setting. Check the schedule for available class offerings and times. 

NOTE:  Participants must be in good physical health with no specific, current physical conditions or concerns. Private sessions may be recommended for clients who are injured, de-conditioned or working with a chronic condition.
